4 week east coast Australia itinerary - campervan travel guide

A 4 week east coast Australia itinerary is one of the best ways to experience the country for the first time. It gives you enough time to travel at a relaxed pace, avoid long driving days, and properly explore the beaches, islands, rainforests and regional towns along the way.

Most travellers complete this journey between Sydney and Cairns, covering more than 2,500 kilometres of coastline. It can also be done in reverse depending on flights and timing.

If you're planning your trip, you may also find it helpful to read our guides on the ultimate East Coast campervan journey, how long you need in Australia, and the best time to visit Australia from Europe.

WEEK 1

Sydney to Byron Bay

Approximate distance 750–800 km

Sydney

Start with 2 to 3 nights in Sydney to recover from travel and explore the harbour, beaches and coastal walks before collecting your campervan.

North Coast New South Wales

As you travel north, the pace naturally slows. This stretch includes coastal towns such as Port Stephens, Port Macquarie, Coffs Harbour and Yamba.

It’s an easy introduction to campervan travel, with shorter driving days, beach stops, national parks and plenty of places to pull over and take your time.

Byron Bay

End the week in Byron Bay. Known for its beaches, lighthouse walks and relaxed atmosphere, it’s a good place to settle into the rhythm of the trip.

WEEK 2

Byron Bay to K'gari

Approximate distance 400–500 km

Gold Coast and Brisbane

Travel into Queensland, passing through the Gold Coast before reaching Brisbane. Many travellers stop here for a night to restock and reset.

Sunshine Coast and Noosa

Continue north to Noosa, one of the most popular stops on the east coast, known for its beaches, coastal walks and national parks.

K’gari (Fraser Island)

Base yourself in Hervey Bay or Rainbow Beach to visit K’gari, the world’s largest sand island.

With freshwater lakes, sand tracks and rainforest growing from the dunes, it’s one of the most unique landscapes in Australia.

Most travellers choose a 3 day, 2 night guided 4WD tour, which allows you to explore more of the island without needing to organise your own vehicle or permits.

WEEK 3

Agnes Water to Whitsundays

Approximate distance 700 km

Agnes Water and 1770

A quieter coastal stop that helps break up the journey. It’s known for its relaxed pace, coastal scenery and smaller crowds.

Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays

Airlie Beach is the gateway to the Whitsundays.

You can explore the region on a full-day trip to Whitehaven Beach, or stay longer and join a 2 day, 2 night sailing experience for a more relaxed pace and access to quieter locations.

WEEK 4

Townsville to Cairns

Approximate distance 350–400 km

Townsville and Magnetic Island

From Townsville, take a short ferry to Magnetic Island, known for its beaches, walking tracks and wildlife, including wild koalas.

Mission Beach

A relaxed coastal town where rainforest meets the sea. This region is also known for cassowaries, a rare and iconic bird found in Far North Queensland.

Atherton Tablelands

Before reaching Cairns, detour inland through the Atherton Tablelands to explore waterfalls, crater lakes and rainforest landscapes.

Cairns

Finish your journey in Cairns and spend a few days exploring the region including the Great Barrier Reef,

Daintree Rainforest and Cape Tribulation, Kuranda Scenic Railway and Skyrail and Cairns Esplanade Lagoon and surrounding areas.

This itinerary can be done in reverse. Starting in Cairns and travelling south works just as well and can be a good option depending on flights and availability.

Final thoughts

This route works because it balances distance with experience. You’re not rushing between destinations, and you have time to adjust your pace along the way.
